August 13 - 20, 2022

Women’s Golf and Travel is excited to offer a 2022 Iceland Fire, Ice & Golf Tour, which includes breathtaking scenery and Icelandic golf. Iceland’s popularity is certainly attributable to its breathtaking natural wonders, including glaciers, steaming geysers, geothermal hot spots, magnificent waterfalls, and the fact that most of the countryside is uninhabitable, away from the encroachment of civilization. Words simply can’t do justice to the natural beauty of Iceland.

  • Playing golf in Iceland is an adventure you’ll remember for a lifetime. Do you think playing golf at midnight surrounded by lava fields sounds too strange to be true? Not in Iceland! Midnight golf is available in summer due to Iceland’s northerly location, and one-tenth of Iceland’s surface is adorned with lava. Sweeping mountains and majestic ocean views characterize Icelandic golf courses, which follow the contours of the naturally dramatic landscape, a popular trend in golf course design today. Their design pays tribute to the first golf courses in Scotland – the home of golf.
  • Did you know Iceland has more golf courses per capita than any other country in the world? Yes. You read that right. The island has 65 golf courses for a mere 321,000 inhabitants, of whom roughly 60,000 are at least occasional golfers. The golf season in Iceland is short—May through September— but when it arrives, it arrives with trumpets blaring. Summertime in Iceland means 24 delicious hours of daylight. And we’re going to experience this wonderland.

We truly look forward to touring with you on this stunning golf and sightseeing trip! Hope you join us…..

Keilir Golf Course - RANKED #1 in ICELAND

The Keilir golf club was founded in 1967. The club was able to acquire spectacular land on the Hvaleyri peninsula for a nine-hole golf course. At that time there were few small farms on the peninsula but with the help from the town council of Hafnafjördur the club was able to get the land for the golf course. The land was ideal for a golf course and a former national champion design the first 9 hole golf course. In 1971 the club got the Swedish golf designer Nils Skjöld to design a new 12 hole golf course on the peninsula. The construction of the new front nine in the lava field was finished in 1997 and since then the golf course has been an 18 hole golf course.

Looking further at the course, the drive on the first par 5 hole is relatively easy but you have to be careful when you approach the green which is nestled between the lava rocks. Next are two short par 4 holes but be careful, you have to be accurate otherwise the lava can swallow your ball. The remaining holes are nicely stretched in the lava. There are no bunkers on the front nine, the lava is plentiful.

Grarfarholt Golf Course - RANKED #2 in ICELAND

The Grafarholt golf course is the oldest 18-hole golf course in Iceland. The course is recognized as Iceland´s premier championship venue and has hosted many European and Nordic tournaments. The course designer used the existing rugged and varied landscape to produce arguably the toughest championship golf course in Iceland with fairways aligned with lava and heather requiring the golfer to use his imagination if he wants to turn in a good score. The magnificent views over the exciting city of Reykjavik make this a unique golfing experience.

The Grafarholt golf course was designed by the Swede, Nils Skold. There is no doubt that he did a fantastic job. The course is unique in that no two holes are alike. You can say that the course consists of 18 completely different holes, each with its own characteristic. This is quite unique and very exciting.

The signature hole is definitely hole number 15, which is a par 5 hole. The tee is up on a hill with a spectacular view over Reykjavik and you have 190 meters in the air to the fairway from the back tee or 140 meters from the yellow tee. The landing area is covered with 4 bunkers.  The approach to the green is difficult, the green is small, you have water in front, on the left side, and at the back are hazards so there are few alternatives except to hit the green.

ODDURR GOLF COURSE - RANKED #6 IN ICELAND

The Oddur Golf Course was inaugurated in August 1997 and is now considered one of the finest golf courses in Iceland.

It is located in beautiful surroundings in the immediate vicinity of the greater area of Urridavatnsdalir, within about 20 minutes’ driving distance from the center of Reykjavik. The golf course is surrounded by lava. It is an exhilarating experience to play golf in the midst of nesting moor birds and enjoy their singing, far away from the city’s noise and everyday toil.

One of the gems in the flora of Icelandic golf courses is Oddur Golf Club. It is located in the municipality of Garðabær, in the outskirts of Reykjavík. It only takes 20 minutes to drive to Oddur Golf Club, from Reykjavik city center. Oddur Golf Club was the venue for the European Ladies´ Amateur Team Championship in 2016 in which 20 national teams competed for the prestigious trophy. The golf course is a heathland course flanked by lava from the dormant volcano Búrfell. The clubhouse, which overlooks the eighteenth and the ninth green, features a bar and a restaurant.
